Funeral services for Stuyvesant Wainwright, 67 years old, well known yachtsman, who died in his home on Milton Point, Rye, yesterday, will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Christ Church, Rye.
Mr. Wainwright, who retired from the building and real estate business many years ago, was born in this city in 1863. He was the son of John Howard and Margaret Livingston Wainwright and was descended in the seventh generation from Peter Stuyvesant, last Dutch governor of New Amsterdam.
He was educated in the public schools of this city and in France and Germany. As a young man he was active in athletics. Mr. Wainwright became interested in yacht racing in the early eighties. His boats the Caramia, the Mimosa and the Butterfly, won many prizes. He sailed in most of the races in this vicinity for many years and for four years in succession he won the Brooklyn Ocean Yacht trophy for the sail around Long Island.
In the world war he offered his services to the Government and was commissioned a lieutenant in the navy. Most of his war service was on the Leviathan in transporting troops.
He was the senior warden in the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Fourth street, here, as a memorial edifice to Bishop Wainwright, his grandfather.
He was a member of the New York Yacht Club, of the Union Club and of the Apawamis Club of Rye, of which he was one of the founders.
His wife, Mrs. Mary Hughes Wainwright; four sons, Stuyvesant Wainwright, Jr., John Howard Wainwright, Loudon Wainwright and Carroll Livingston Wainwright; and two brothers, Representative J. Mayhew Wainwright and Richard Tighe Wainwright, survive.
